From flexibility to processing complex surfaces

23.10.2026

How can a single machine process different products while ensuring effective shot blasting of challenging surfaces? In our two previous articles, we explored two related aspects of the universal robotic shot blasting machine: its flexibility in handling different workpieces and the role of positioning when processing complex geometries.

This time, we bring these two topics together to explain what this approach means for production.

Flexibility starts with how the machine works

In the article What makes a robotic shot blsting machine universal?, we introduced the basic concept: the robot handles the workpiece, while the blasting wheels perform the shot blasting. Combining these two technologies allows different processing programs to be developed for the same machine.

The article take a closer look at what makes the machine universal, the differences between robotic shot blasting concepts, and the development of a gripping unit designed for demanding operating conditions.

Complex geometries highlight the value of positioning

In the follow-up article, Complex workpieces require a different approach to shot blasting, we focused on the workpiece itself. We explainted why ribs, recesses and internal corners restrict abrasive access, and how changing the workpiece's position can improve the exposure of individual surfaces to the abrasive stream.

The article provides more information on suitable workpieces, the challenges posed by complex geometries, and the benefits of robotic handling during shot blasting.

What do these two insights mean for production?

The key message of both articles is that machine flexibility and effective surface treatment stem from the same principle: adapting the workpiece's position and movement to the processing requirements.

For different products, this allows tailored programs to be used, while for complex surfaces, it improves access for the abrasive stream. The pgrammed sequence of movements and positions also supports process repeatability for specific workpieces and production batches.

When evaluating this solution, it therefore makes sense to consider product variety, surface accessibility and gripping options together. The machine's suitability for a particular production process also depends on the size and weight of the workpieces and the required surface quality.
